Outdoor Activites

Surfing
If you are an experienced surfer, the North Shore has world famous waves. Although not fully into peak winter season during September, the chance of getting some swell is still high. Bring your own board, rent or barrow one here! No need for full wetsuit, a simple rash guard will suffice or spring suit will be comfortable.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Stand up paddle board directly from the beach or enjoy a nice cruise up the 'Anahulu River. SUPs are reasonable to rent from Surf & Sea in Haleiwa and will not need to be transported if you are planning to go up the river and the surrounding area. Please plan accordingly if you would like to transport the SUP to another location as a truck or SUV will be needed. Another place to rent SUPs on the river is Tsue Farms but we recommend Surf & Sea because you start at the bottom of the river and go up and there is ample parking.

Snorkeling
Hawaii has beautiful beaches and reefs for snorkeling. The closest places to check out fish to the venue and accommodations are Shark's Cove, Waimea Bay, and Laniakea Beach (for turtles). You can snorkel directly from the beach. If you have snorkeling gear, you are more than welcome to bring it, otherwise it is very easy to purchase a cheap set at Foodland or rent it from Surf & Sea.

Hiking
There are three great hikes on the North Shore and A LOT all over the island. Depending on the weather, we suggest going after there has been a couple of dry days as it is very easy to slip in a lot of mud going down a steep hill if it has recently rained. Safety first!

Ehukai Pillboxes
If you are looking to do a quick hike that is approx. two miles with a great view, we highly recommend The Pillbox above Pipeline. The trailhead is located in the parking lot at Sunset Beach Elementary across from Ehukai Beach Park. The view is incredible and children can go on this hike.

Pupukea
Behind the Ehukai Pillboxes, there are another set of trails up Pupukea Paulmalu Forest Reserve. You can access these hikes a variety of ways but we suggest driving up Pupukea Road. The area is mostly covered with pine trees and a bit more rainier than other parts of the North Shore. Winds can also become strong in this area with trees falling from gusts so time accordingly. There are several trails that all loop together at some point.

Crouching Lion
Crouching Lion is bit past Kahuku and Laie but fairly easy to get to. The hike is incredibly steep but very short with amazing views! This hike is not recommended for children or elders, as it is very steep at certain points.
